Gibson

DukeMeet Gibson, a sweet, relaxed Boxer who loves to just hang out with his people, whether that’s snuggling next to you on the couch or following you from room to room! His foster mom says he loves to give lots of Boxer kisses, too.

Gibson came to Atlanta Boxer Rescue under some heartbreaking circumstances. This sweet boy was actually shot in the leg. It’s scary to think of how that could have happened... and his previous owner couldn’t afford the cost of the extensive veterinary care Gibson would need, so he was dropped off at animal control. Sadly, the best animal control could do for him was providing antibiotics to prevent infection. He didn’t receive any painkillers or other treatment.

Fortunately for Gibson, after he’d spent a week in the shelter, ABR came to the rescue! Gibson’s injured leg was in pretty bad shape; the gun shot had shattered his elbow. He could put weight on it if he had to, but he was limping and clearly in pain. No one wanted to see Gibson lose his leg, but after consulting two surgeons, it was determined that amputation was the only option. The folks at Paces Ferry Animal Clinic performed the surgery two weeks ago, and now Gibson is on the road to recovery.

Most dogs who lose a leg to injury or illness bounce back quickly, and learn to get around on three legs just as well as on four. In fact, some vets joke that dogs are born with three legs and a spare! Gibson is now learning to balance on his three legs, adapting to a new way of walking, running, climbing onto the couch, and of course doing the famous Boxer wiggle (and his foster mom says he loves to wiggle as hard as he can!). He still has the staples in from his surgery, but once those are removed, he’ll be ready to meet his forever family.

Gibson has endured a great deal of pain during his life so far... and now he has a second chance! But paying for such an expensive veterinary procedure is a special challenge for the finances of a nonprofit rescue organization like ABR. Please consider donating to help defray the costs of Gibson’s surgery! In doing so, you are helping to ensure that ABR can continue rescuing Boxers like Gibson.
